Research-based interactive workshops will engage participants as they explore these age appropriate topics:

  • Keeping your hair and skin healthy with expert advice from stylist and skin care professionals.
  • Dressing your best with body image and fashion awareness from local fashion experts.
  • Nutrition and quick simple workouts for busy teens with fitness professionals.
  • A wealth of information from national experts and team members there to listen to your questions and discuss the topics you want to know about.
  • Fun, surprises and learning you will take with you and use rest of your life.

Girls Sessions

Tween and teen participants will participate alongside their friends and peers in high energy break-out sessions facilitated by local and national professionals. Topics will include:

  • Communicating with Friends
  • Fashion Sense
  • Healthy Skin Care
  • Personal Safety
  • Hair Trends and Tips
  • Zumba Dance
  • Outdoor Teambuilding
  • Light make-up application
  • “Eat This, Not That” – Nutrition Tips by Michelle Dudash
  • Surviving Middle School Using Humor

Parent Sessions

Parents and caregivers are strongly encouraged to participate in concurrent breakout sessions designed to help you understand the complexities of a young teen’s life. Participants will be given tools to edify your child’s development in simple and meaningful ways. Topics will include:

Keynote Speaker for Parents

Dr. Frances Mills-Yerger and the Peer Leadership Team from Workshops for Youth and Families present ”Queen Bees and Wannabes” This opening presentation is a moving and powerful presentation by high school girls and boys that will give parents a true glimpse into their “tween/teen’s” world.  Led by Dr. Frances Mills-Yerger, reknowned parenting and counseling expert, you will witness a startling look at today’s youth and the constant pressures they face.

While some things are typical and developmental about upper elementary and middle school years,   A LOT has changed…texting, sexting, prescription drug use, and social media sites like Facebook are just some of the new dangers that are weighing heavily on our children. This performance is designed to truly open your mind to how to support and assist your tween/teen through their 5th-8th grade journey, as they transition through undoubtedly the most difficult part of schooling!

 

Tibby Cornelius will be leading the keynote presentation Unbuckle Your Chuckle: Top 10 Tips for Parenting! This session will provide a hilarious look at parenting from the inside out! Tibby Cornelius is a locally renowned parenting advocate and expert and she will lead you through the top 10 tips for to being a positive parent…don’t be a lone ranger, join us!

 

The Five Love Languages of Children: Communicating Effectively with your Teen – This session will focus on the five “Love Languages” based on the best selling book by Dr. Gary Chapman. Dr. Kelly Bender, Marriage and Family Counselor and Senior Pastor at PVUMC. Dr. Bender will lead parents through identifying your primary and secondary love languages and those of your child and how to work in tandem together to meet the social and emotional needs of your growing teen.

 

How to Become GirlWise: Fostering Respect and Inner Strength in Your Daughter – Presented by Stacey Bruen, M.C., NCC, CPC, and Tamara Rounds, LCSW.  This interactive session will aim to increase your ability to influence your daughters to develop social and emotional strength, appropriate behavior, assets, and some skills that can assist them to face the challenges that occur in adolescence. Following the powerful presentation of ”Queen Bee,”  Tamara and Stacy will work with parents to show the effects that relational aggression has on girls who are struggling with cliques, gossip, and bullying. In addition, you will learn practical ways to mentor and coach your daughters to build resiliency and effective relationship skills.

 

Risky Business – Detective Frank Griffitts of the Cyber Crimes Unit of the Scottsdale Police Dept. and Stephanie Siete of Community Bridges are joining forces to bring you the REAL information about current trends in technology, online relational aggression, and how technology is influencing the decisions and risk taking behaviors of our youth, most specifically drugs, alcohol, and explicit materials.
